Final Exam Preparation - Body Paragraph 2

Today we will continue preparing for the Final Exam/Portfolio, which I've attached to this Do Now along with the course Writing Guide and Telescoping the Times packet. As I mentioned, we will be working on the Final Exam, which will be due the last week of May, piece-by-piece, according to the outline on the second page of the attached Final Exam handout. First, we will compose each body paragraph, then we will compose the introduction and conclusion paragraphs before revising and editing prior to the final due date.

Now that you have a first draft of your thesis statement as well as a first draft of your first body paragraph, we can proceed to composing a response to the second body paragraph, which counts for an Assignment grade today (as usual), and is a response to the question, "How did American society change throughout the turn of the 20th century?" Remember that the Final Exam is cumulative, meaning that it covers everything we've learned in this course from chapter 13 (Changes on the Western Frontier) through chapter 19 (The First World War).

To begin, compose a properly-formatted paragraph in complete sentences in response to the question "How did American society change throughout the turn of the 20th century?" by following these directions:
1. Compose a topic sentence that restates and specifically answers the question "How did American society change throughout the turn of the 20th century?"
2. Look through chapters 13 through 19 on pages 25 through 38 in the attached Telescoping the Time packet for a quote or piece of textual evidence that supports your argument on how America's society changed throughout the turn of the 20th century, then either copy and paste it in quotes before including a brief introduction, or simply paraphrase it in your own words. (Hint: we learned about American society in almost every chapter, but chapters 15 "Immigrants and Urbanization" and 16 "Life at the Turn of the 20th Century" in particular focus specifically on social issues. Also, just FYI: quotes do count toward the 11-sentence limit per paragraph).
3. Explain your first quote/piece of textual evidence in your own words in 1-2 complete sentences.
4. Repeat step 2, but find another quote or piece of textual evidence. You can use the same chapter as long as you're making a different point (think of yourself as a lawyer trying to convince a jury in court - one piece of evidence is good, but more is better).
5. Repeat step 3, but for your second quote/piece of textual evidence.
6. Compose a summary or transition to the next paragraph on changes in American politics in one complete sentence.
7. Revise/edit as needed. (Could you add more specific information to your topic sentence now that you've got supporting evidence? Did you follow the rules of the writing guide with regard to paragraph length, use of first-person, tense, etc.? Is everything grammatically correct? Does the paragraph flow/should you use clearer transitions?)
