Math DO NOW due 2:30 pm and LESSON “Probability & Combinations #2” Mr. Mui

Friday 3/20/2020 (“C” day; all classes)
DO NOW: “Probability & Combinations #2”
The DO NOW must be completed and submitted; you will get a grade AND this is how you will have your attendance recorded for the day. You may simply make a copy of the assignment, show YOUR work and final answer and turn it in;
others have taken a picture of their notebook or their calculation showing their handwritten

DO NOW work & answer. Either method is acceptable but must be submitted/turned-in via Google Classroom. Don’t forget to go do today’s LESSON after you finish the DO NOW.

Vanessa is getting hungry.
The cafeteria has three types of entrees today (pizza, chicken sandwich, hot dog);
three types of sides (french fries, corn, peas).
Four drink choices (apple juice, orange juice, water, milk).
She may get only one of each. How many unique combinations are there (food+side+drink)?

Show your work; do NOT just give final answer.

3 entree choices x 3 side choices x 4 drink choices
3 x 3 x 4  = 36 possible combinations

END OF DO NOW

LESSON
Friday 3/20/2020  (“C” day; all classes)
LESSON:   “Probability & Combinations #2” & SAT-type problems
This lesson must be done as well.  Problems on future quizzes, tests, and the final will be from some of these lessons, so please take your remote learning  and work very seriously.  IF INSTRUCTED, you also need to submit classwork to be graded.  Again, you may simply make a copy of the assignment, show YOUR work and final answers and turn it in; others have taken a picture of their notebook or their calculation showing their handwritten CLASSWORK work & answers.  Either method is acceptable but must be submitted/turned-in via Google Classroom.  If you didn’t do the DO NOW, make sure you go back and do it (need for attendance & a grade).

Today’s lesson is practice problems of what we covered in class last week.  You will have a QUIZ ON MONDAY ON THESE TYPES OF PROBLEMS.

WORK TO DO: Answer the following questions CAREFULLY.  Show ALL calculations; do NOT just give final answer.  You may leave answers as reduced fractions.  If any answers are not integers, round to ONE decimal place.

1) Jayleen has 4 pairs of Nikes, 2 pairs of Converse, 1 pair of vans (7 sneakers)
she has 12 t-shirts, 3 polos;  (15 shirts)
9 pairs of jeans, 4 pairs of sweatpants, 8 pairs of shorts.  (21 pants)

If she can only wear ONE footwear, ONE bottom, and ONE top, how many possible combinations are there?
7 * 15 * 21 = 2205 ans

2) Shaq has 15 pairs of sneakers,  3 pairs of clogs/slides, 3 pairs of shoes; (21 footwear)
he has 35 t-shirts and 5 tank tops;  (40 shirts)
7 pairs of jeans, 10 pairs of basketball shorts.(17 pants)
If he can only wear ONE footwear, ONE bottom, and ONE top, how many possible combinations are there?   21 * 40 * 17 = 14,280 ans

3 a) What is the probability of getting both 2’s when you roll two dice?
1/6 * 1/6 = 1/36 ans

b) Anna rolls two dice, what is the probability of the total equaling exactly eight?
2&6, 3&5, 5&3, 6&2 = 4/36

4) What is the probability of getting all sixes when you roll four dice?
1/6 * 1/6 * 1/6 * 1/6 = 1/1296 ans

5) Gene’s wallet has eight quarters, six dimes, three nickels and 14 pennies.  What is the probability of him randomly selecting a coin at least equal to five cents?
8Q
6D
3N
14P
31 coins , Quarters, Dimes and Nickels (at least = 5 cents) = 19, Probability = 19/31 ans

6) Rosalie took four quizzes and one test so far.
The test is worth twice a quiz.  Her average is 78.5.
She has only ONE more quiz before the marking period ends.
What grade does she need to finish the marking period with an 80?
Quizzes + Test = Total points
so far
3Q           +2Q = 5*78.5 = 392.5
480 total point needed to average 80 how many points needed?
  480- 392.5 = 87.5 ans

7) Brian has
four pairs of glasses,
two pairs of headphones,
three mustang sweatshirts.  What are the unique combinations possible?
4 x 2 x 3 = 24 ans

8) KFC:  MEAL ( fried chicken in Krispy Kreme donut,  three-piece chicken, ten boneless nuggets);
SIDE (mash with gravy, french fries);
DRINK (pepsi, diet coke, root beer, Sprite).
You may pick one meal, one side, and one drink.  How many combinations are there?
3 meals x 2 sides x 4 drinks = 24 ans

9) JJ  took six quizzes and two tests so far.
Tests are worth twice a quiz.
His average is 78 so far.  He has to take the final.
Total points so far
6Q + 2(2Q) = 78*10=780

The final is equivalent to two tests.
Note: 2 Tests = 4 Quizzes

Is it possible for him to finish the year with a grade of exactly 85?
Need 6Q + 4Q (2 tests) + 4Q (final) = 85*14 total points = 1190
1190 -780 = 410 , 410/4 = 102.5
Is it possible for him to finish the year with a grade of exactly 85?  No

What does he have to get on the final for this to happen? 102.5

10) Krystal has five episodes of a show to catch up on before the show comes back on to finish the season.  IF (not realistic) she can watch these five episodes in ANY order, how many possible combinations are there? 5 * 4 * 3 * 2 * 1 Permutions also call 5 Factorial short hand 5! = 120 ans
