B day Math Mui Review

Today is Thu 5/7 “A” or Fri 5/8 “B”  Day

Your final will be coming up soon and you will receive more details this week.  If you’ve been doing your work during our Distance Learning (DL), you will do fine on it!  We will also be reviewing during your upcoming DoNows and Lessons.  So please continue to work diligently.  You may also start reviewing the DoNows and Lessons on your own to prepare for the final.

Your final will be in two parts
50%  A project with two of the real-life applications you were assigned during DL
50%  A test with the type of problems from the DoNows and Lessons during DL

MOST of you are putting in good effort everyday.  That’s GREATTT!!!

...but some of you are not:

* Some of you are still copying OR giving answers to each other!  PLEASE do not email me to ask “why did you give me an F ?” <<this is what YOU chose to earn!

** some are just randomly hitting some letters on your keyboards, such as “ASDFGH” etc. (EVEN THOUGH your answer should be a number!!)

*** some are making up answers, such as “123456”

**** some are just writing something inappropriate and not even submitting any work or answers

THIS means some of you are NOT earning ANY points at all!
YOU are choosing to receive a ZERO, and
(if it’s the DoNow) YOU are choosing to be marked ABSENT

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE - DO YOUR WORK.  IT IS FOR YOUR SAKE!!!!

Thank you.

LESSON: Final Project Review#2 (Volume, Pythagorean Theorem, Covid-19 Exponential Growth Model)  ;the answers are given today, YOU MUST practice until you get the SAME answer.  Email or message me via GoogleClassRoom if you need help!!  YOU need this in order to do well on your Final Project correctly!!!!  Many of you asked how you can get your grades up...THIS IS HOW since the Final is a BIG percentage of your YEAR grade!!

*** YOU DO NOT NEED TO TURN ANYTHING IN TODAY! ***<<<<many of you didn’t read this and asked me if there is anything to turn in.  PLEASE read EVERYTHING carefully (I even put this in a HUGE font)!!!

REVIEW THE FOLLOWING PREVIOUS LESSONS and PRACTICE THE EXAMPLES UNTIL YOU GET THE SAME ANSWERS!!!

BOX:
(from Wed 3/25/2020 “A” or Thu 3/26/2020 “B”)
LESSON:   Surface Area & Volume of Shipping Boxes (SAT)

Introduction:  Many of you have received boxes from Amazon.  In fact, if you follow the news and current Coronavirus “stay at home” situation, many families are ordering more things from Amazon.

NOTES: Every box has a “surface area” and a “volume”.  You can think of surface area as how much wrapping paper you would need to cover the entire box (there are six sides or flat areas).  Volume is how much the box can hold inside.

The box’s volume is l*w*h   (given directly in the SAT formula section),  V=l*w*h  (in cubic units)

The box’s surface area is not given directly, but you can visualize that it has four identical surface areas of l*h and the two “ends” of the box are w*h.  The width can be visualized as the depth of the box.  So the total surface area, S.A. = 4(l*h) + 2(w*h)  (in square units)

Below are the boxes you can buy from the Post Office to pack and mail something yourself.

**PICK any TWO boxes (there are five below in the Post Office price list).
For each box you pick, calculate 1) its surface area,  2) volume, and 3) price per cubic inch (divide price by the volume you calculated; hint use cents).  Put your final answers in the organizer below:

ANSWERS:
Box 1 (dimensions =____________)
          S.A.=____________in2       Vol=__________in3      Cents/in3 = __________

PICK any TWO boxes from this Post Office price list:
USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate Options
Type
Size
Price
Small Box
8 11/16" x 5 7/16" x 1 3/4"
$7.65
Medium Boxes
11 1/4" x 8 3/4" x 6" or 14" x 12" x 3 1/2"
$13.20
Large Box
12-1/4" x 12-1/4" x 6" or 24-1/16" x 11-7/8" x 3-1/8"
$18.30
CORRECT Answers (volume):
Small 82.67 cubic inches
Medium#1     590.625 cubic inches
Medium#2     588.0 cubic inches
Large#1     900.375 cubic inches
Large#2     892.94 cubic inches

SAT formulas:

Covid-19 Exponential Growth Model:
On the Monday, 3/15/2020 (the week you started being quarantined at home), there were approximately 4000 confirmed Covid-19 cases in the U.S. (4000 infected people)

One exponential model of infection (growth) uses ert as the multiplier to calculate how many total cases would be present after x number of days.

For example, let’s use an infection (growth) rate of 20% for ONE week, or seven days:
ert = e(20%)(7days) = e(0.20)(7) = 4.055  <<< IF PEOPLE DID NOT QUARANTINE, so the infection rate stayed high, at 20%, this means that the original 4000 cases would grow to  4000 * 4.055 = 16,200 cases after just seven days!
*****This is why “exponential growth” increases SO rapidly!!*****

note: if you do not have an “e” or ex button, use 2.718 for the approximate value of e

(today’s questions):   Turn in your answers (a,b,c) to get a grade!

a) Calculate: Starting with 4000 cases, if there was no quarantine, and the infection rate continued to be 20%, how many total cases would there be after ONE month (30 days)?
4000 * e(      )(      )   = ___________
CORRECT Answer:
4000 * e(0.20 * 30)   = 1,612,712

b) Calculate: Starting with 4000 cases, IF THERE IS A QUARANTINE, and the infection rate GOES DOWN to 15%, how many total cases would there be now after ONE month (30 days)?
4000 * e(      )(      )   = ___________
CORRECT Answer:
4000 * e(0.15 * 30)   = 359,901
1
c) How many potential lives were saved because of the quarantine and by reducing the infection rate from 20% down to 15%?  (hint: use your answers to  a and b)
CORRECT Answer:
1,612,712 - 359,901 = 1,252,811
