Pre-Calc Mr. Mui Due 2:30 PM DO NOW Thursday 4/2 “B” New Work 4,5,6

REVIEW of the last class’s Do Now (read carefully!!)
The following is a student’s response. Please READ my comments CAREFULLY. Many of you made the same mistakes.
How much is TEN pounds of the item? $59.99 X
The student DID NOT say what food he or she is buying. But it looks like the steak, which is $5.99 per pound.
The cost of TEN pounds is $5.99/lb x 10lb = $59.90, not 59.99 or 60.00, which many of you answered. The answer is EXACT (it’s what the cashier’s display would show!); DO NOT round or add the extra “9” !

In New Jersey, sales tax is 7%. However, groceries are not taxed. What is the amount of total taxes on the TEN pounds you didn’t have to pay (so you saved!) ? $8.57 cents X
That’s too much tax! Don’t get ripped off and overpay!!
7% is calculated 0.07 x 59.90 = $4.19

Wednesday 4/1 “A” or Thursday 4/2 “B” LESSON
LESSON:   Percent Problems on the SATs #2
Repeat notes from last class AND REVIEW of the problems’ answers (read carefully!!)
Lesson:
The following is a typical percent problem that you will encounter on the SAT (I am explaining it here AND I’m giving you a video to watch which summarizes all the steps):

Let’s say you own a store and sell customized cellphone cases.  You buy each case for $16.80.  Since you are a business (and want to make money!), you want to create a buzz and get lots of customers into your store, so you hold a “sale” and advertise that this week, the cases are 25% off!!

You also still want to make a profit and your goal is to make 25% on each case so that you can pay the rent on the store and eventually be rich (when you sell enough!).

How do you make a 25% profit AND get the customers to “feel good” by them taking 25% off of the listed price when they bring their cases to the cashier? In other words, what price do you “sell” each case for; what price should your sign say for a cellphone case?

Step 1: “mark-up” your $16.80 cost by 25% to give yourself a 25% profit:  $16.80 x (1.25) = $21.00
{note the “1.25” factor is how you mark-up by 25%}

Step 2: Figure out what total price you should advertise so that the customer can take 25% off, and you will still receive $21.00 for each case:
Set equation up:   21 = (0.75) x (Advertised TOTAL Price)
Divide both sides by 0.75
{note the “0.75” factor is how you discount, or “take off” 25%}

Advertised TOTAL Price = 21/0.75 = $28 <<THIS IS WHAT YOU SHOULD SELL EACH CASE FOR

CAUTION: do not simply multiply $21 by the 1.25 factor again!  If you do, the WRONG answer (26.25) is right there in the multiple choices “waiting to trap you”.  DO NOT PICK IT!

REVIEW of the problems’ answers (read carefully!!)

Question #1 Each case got more expensive for you to buy.  They cost you $17 now.  How much do you sell each for to get a 25% profit AND can have customers take a 25% sale discount?
Work
$17 x (1.25) = $21.25
21.25 = (0.75) x (Advertised TOTAL Price)
Advertised TOTAL Price = 21.25/0.75 = $28.33 <<< Answer

Question #2 You sell car mounts for cellphones.  They cost you $20 each.  How much do you sell each for to get a 30% profit AND can have customers take a 25% sale discount?
$20 x (1.30) = $26.00
26.00 = (0.75) x (Advertised TOTAL Price)
Advertised TOTAL Price = 26.00/0.75 = $34.67 <<< Answer
Question #3 You sell screen protectors for cellphones.  They cost you $5 each.  How much do you sell each for to get a 40% profit AND can have customers take a 30% sale discount?
$5 x (1.40) = $7.00
7.00 = (0.70) x (Advertised TOTAL Price)
Advertised TOTAL Price = 7.00/0.70 = $10.00 <<< Answer
