Pre-Calc Due 2:30 PM DO NOW: Tue 4/7B Squares & Cubes of positives & negatives Mr. Mui
Do Now:
Classwork:
Tue 4/7”B”
LESSON: Squares & Cubes of positives & negatives
1) A “SquareRoot” is the inverse of squaring a number:
Example: 9^2=81 SquareRoot(81)=9 It’s easy!
For real numbers, we can’t take square roots of negative numbers. This is because squaring two real numbers can’t give you a negative!
2) A “CubeRoot” is the inverse of cubing a number:
Example: 2^3=8 CubeRoot(8)=2 It’s easy!
We CAN take cube roots of negative numbers! This is because cubing negative numbers does give you a negative; since (-2)(-2)(-2) = -8, so THERE IS A REAL ANSWER to CubeRoot(-8) = -2 !!
Another example: CubeRoot(-1) = -1 since (-1)(-1)(-1) = -1
3) WATCH THIS Khan Academy VIDEO carefully and in FULL (it is only ~8mins!). It explains what I summarized above including the geometric interpretation!

ANSWER AND TURN THESE IN!
Question #1 SquareRoot(100) = ___________
Question #2 SquareRoot(49) = ___________
Question #3 CubeRoot(64) = ___________
Question #4 CubeRoot(-64) = ___________ (answer explained in video)
Question #5 CubeRoot(125) = ___________
Question #6 CubeRoot(-125) = ___________
